wide awake at 7am 

with a smile on my face i shook you by the hand

but you shook me off, you’re too tired you said

so you turned your back 

and we stayed in bed 

1pm and the covers come off

my mums been waiting all morning for us

but i shouldn’t stress

yes, i stress too much

cause my family make you crazy enough 

mum’s made a cake with the candles in

under your breath you laugh, ask if i’m ten

then my dad’s trying to joke, but your face is blank

like a ship you’ve wrecked

my hearts just sank

friend from work bought me a bouquet

with a card that said

hope you’re okay

you spat on the flowers

smashed the vase

said you’d strangle me if i replied to the card

nighttime wine, you let me pick a movie

but it got quite boring when you started yawning 

the drink got to your head and you started writhing

your hand to the place that i wanted 

private 

tried to move away but i could see it in your eyes 

that that was all you were after tonight

and if that’s what you wanted

then that’s what you’d get

because what’s a birthday without birthday sex?

* these past two years have worn me down

but i never shed a tear

the only day i’ll allow

is a cry on my birthday 

each year
